So for this blog assignment we had to find something interesting not just for ourselves but our classmates. So I just got out of the gym and figured I might as well doing something pertaining the gym. So I decided to connect to it to the last week blog doing something out of you comfort zone, and I googled some things on gym that popped in my head. The first was many of the excuses that people use for not going to the gym. Forty six percent of people said they don’t go to the gym because they said its’ too crowded. This doesn’t make sense for me cause there are times that they gym could be to over crowded but there are times that are dead times so people could work around it. Another twenty one percent say they don’t go because they don’t know what to do. Which I find another bad excuse for not going you can always ask someone that works there. That’s the reason their there getting paid. Nineteen percent said they didn’t want to go because they didn’t feel like they were in good enough shape to go the gym. This is the worst one I heard out of all of them because you can’t get to where you want to be with out going to the gym. You can’t say you don’t want to go to the gym because you don’t feel buff enough, your not there because your too worried about going to the gym. So all this leads to one thing. Are there things that hold you back, that you’re afraid to go get because you’re too worried about the little things that don’t matter outside of your head. This matters in college because there’s going to be many things in college that you’re going to really think about and go outside your comfort. Will you do it?

comfort zones
Since being at college we have done a lot of things that put us outside of our comfort zones. Living on our own and now having all our responsibilities on our shoulders, having no on there to help us with many of our things. One thing that I did that was out side of my comfort zone was helping a kid with his public speaking project. I’m not use to helping or tutoring some one when it comes to work. I’ve always been some one, when working in groups to do my section and hand it in or do the whole project. I always felt better if I did the work cause I knew it would be done right. So helping someone and having to show them everything was kind of weird for me. But I did help the kid with his project. He had to make a power point of easily describing a cover 2 defense to a person who doesn’t understand football. So we had to make some thing very complex and break it down enough for any one to under stand. So first off I had to help him with using the power point program because he did know how to make it look good. Making all the fonts pop, and come out in different ways. I also had to help with breaking it down to make it simple enough for every person. Which was probably the hardest part because it’s a complex defense to run and if you have no football knowledge it would be hard to understand. So we needed to get multiple slides of the defense and break it down from what the line does, to the line backers if there in zone or man, the corner backs in zone or man. Then the two free safeties playing there zones at the top of the defense. So that was something that I went out of my comfort zone to do.

Semster grades
My grades this semester that I have received have been just we I had expected. I haven’t received a midterm in this class or in my exercise science class. But in Italian and Anthropology I have received both of my midterm grades. I have a B+ in my Italian class, and it should go up because I just took a test and did well on it and I have another test in that class on Friday. Also my participation in that class is very high and all my homework is completed and always on time. So even if my test grades are lower I have things too help in that class. I also have a lab in that class that I have completed all the work for every time it’s due. Anthropology is going well as long as I keep up with the work ill be fine. If you complete the homework and participate in class you should do well in the class. Since the class is based on the four main essays I also have to do well on the other three that are coming up in the class. In exercise science we don’t have homework so it’s mainly based on tests and the inquiry papers that we have once a month. We also have to turn in papers once a week from our clinicals that we have to do weekly in the Moore Field house athletic training center. All our tests are on our power points so if I keep up with those on line and study them before tests I should be doing just fine. In this class as long as I do all the blogs and make them to the right amount of words ill be fine. I also participate regularly in class which is a plus and I never have missed a class so I don’t have to worry about that either.

look how far we've come
The time management on this project could have been planned better on my part. I should have looked into the IMovie more in the beginning then I did. But the tutorials online helped a good amount. My roommate also helped a lot in the beginning on showing me the little things and some things that I wouldn’t have found out from the tutorials because he had used in high school for a couple projects. But the part that hasn’t been to bad for me is getting people to do interviews for me. I still need to get one of my professor’s opinions. But all the students have been very willing to let me interview them. I still have to transfer all my information onto my IMovie and get it into the right places so it flows in a proper manor. That will probably be the most difficult part of the assignment, because if you want the movie to be enjoyable and not a drug on for eight to ten minutes. I also want to do it in a comedic way if I can to get a little relief throughout the video and have it flow better then it would. Interview after interview then some quotes would be a bore to me, so I want to make it something that I would want to watch and not have the class sleeping on me. We have to watch about 20 of these so I don’t want the to get old after the second one. Plus I want to put something in my video that makes mine stand out from others. So I don’t want it like every other video have something distinct in it have a little flare and make it an enjoyable experience for you and our class to watch and keep the awake.

critical thinking project
My progress on my video is in the beginning stages. I have set up some times with people to do interviews. I have interviewed my good friend across the hall so far and have an idea for a creative introduction. I’m thinking about getting slides that say what is critical thinking in all-different languages to show the diversity of the question. I know that many of us will have the some of the same answers from people, but many will have very different opinions on this subject. I think it depends on the person’s outlook on life if they truly use critical thinking. I think it could affect a person’s outlook if they have a job that they have to constantly think out side the box. Would it make them a better problem solver when things go wrong? After learning about critical thinking, I realized I used it in random aspects of life that I never thought I would be using it during. So when I’m about to interview someone and they tell me they don’t know what it is and I explain it to them and they have a look on there face like they knew exactly what I was talking about after a couple seconds of explaining. But I think that this project could give a creative aspect and that everyone will learn something from everyone’s project. It has so many people’s opinions good or bad that, you’ll have something to discuss at the end of the class. Then we have professors telling us what they think, and I feel that their aspects of critical thinking will really broaden our views of what critical thinking actually is. So I think that this project even though it’s hard, it will help us in our anthropology class and make us better thinkers.

Critical Thinking in Sports Medicine
My major is Exercise Science- Athletic training portion. This was a difficult thing to connect the two together. We’re taught by the book, so the one way were taught is the way we should do it. But obviously every person has there way of doing something their way. “… Critical Thinking means simply good problem solving.” (Pg 59) So I guess the way critical thinking would be involved is, if an injury happened and we didn’t have the proper utensils to help an athlete. We would have to go outside the box and find a way to put things together to stabilize a site of injury. “What are my assumptions in this situation” (Pg. 59) this is an important step because your gut feeling is usually the one you should go with. You have to trust your instincts because if you second judge yourself in front of someone it could make them have an uneasy feeling about the situation. So I Say an athlete breaks and arm or a leg and we didn’t have an air cast to stabilize. I would find anything that I have with me to stabilize it such as a firm piece of foam or anything that I have on me that will keep the leg or arm straight to relive pressure off the site of the injury. Keeping the injured person calm would be a key component. Another aspect that could arise if I were to come upon an injured person would you stop and help? The only reason that this would stop me from doing anything is I could mess up or do something wrong. Which already puts a feeling of second guessing my self from the start. I would also have to worry about a person coming back and trying to sue me for practicing out of my field, not having enough experience in the things that I would be helping them in. So Critical thinking could be used in any aspect of life.

So many clubs which to choose...?
When they had the big gathering of all the clubs outside of Connecticut Hall I walked through the humongous crowd of people that gathered. I went through and found the paintball club, which was the main reason I went. My friends brother that also goes to Southern made the club his sophomore year. I used to play paintball at home with my friends in the woods of their backyards. So it was an easy choice for me to sign up for the club. The other stand I walked by was the TKE frat, the reason I stopped by there was I heard they recently acquired a new house. Which was a plus because I know how grimy a frat house can get over the years.

stressed out
The way people deal with stress is something that is different from person to person. People can have the same coping techniques, like for me personally I use working out, and today at the gym I asked someone I work out if they use it as a coping technique for stress. It just relaxes me and relieves stress and anger. It’s almost like a safe place for me to go. For whatever I have going on, stress related or not. When I worked during the school year I would go to school then work so I wouldn’t get out till about 5. Then I would go to work out when I was done. Then sometimes when I would miss it, I wouldn’t feel right, like I didn’t have time to relax in my day. But now that I’m at school I’ve been using music to relax me. It also helps me when I have to do homework makes me concentrate more. So I’ve been using music as a productivity tool. It also keeps me awake cause I’ll sing to it sometime, so I wont doze off during homework. Another thing that’s been working for me great is I’ll go outside and throw the football around in the quad. Football was always a stress reliever that’s why I loved playing it in high school. Anytime I was upset I always had football after school and it gave me a time every day to clear my head and relieve anything I had on my mind. So I have a good amount of things I can do to relieve myself of stress here at school. So I haven’t been stressed out at school which is good because the load of college hanging over you head is enough to make you go crazy and be stressed out.

Avoiding the sniffles
There are many things that don’t help your cause in college in not getting sick. You don’t always get enough sleep with is vital in staying in good health. Another factor that doesn’t help you cause either is the food you eat at school and when you eat it cause of your schedule. You eat a lot of things that you shouldn’t eat because it’s open to you everyday. On top of that you have the misfortune of skipping breakfast cause you don’t have time to eat in the morning, then eating dinner past 9 o’clock isn’t good for your body. Also keeping up with hygiene always watching your hands. You’re also in close quarters with another person so if they get sick you now have a higher chance of getting sick. If you do get sick you should take medicine and try and get yourself back to health as quick as possible. Cause if you miss class its so easy to fall behind because classes are so up beat. The thing I would advise doing if you do happen to get sick. You should have contact with someone in all of your classes that you’re missing. So you can keep up with the reading and work to keep as up to date. So when you get back to health and are able to get back to class you can be on top of all the work that you missed. I’ve been sick for the past two weeks but I haven’t missed any classes. I have been taking Advil and cold medicine to try and slow it down. But the lack of sleep hasn’t helped the cause. I would feel better for a couple of a days, then going back to feeling sick and I think it was cause of my abnormal sleep and eating schedule.

Your stressing to?
My campus safari today was to the health center on campus. It’s located next to the police station and across from the wintergreen building. You can go there for physicals; you can go there if your sick you can go there to get medicine. The main health problems that college students face are STD’s, eating disorders and overwhelming amount of stress. The one thing I was interested in was stress in college students because its something we will all go through. Either having a problem with an upcoming exam, midterms or finals. Can make you stay up for hours straight studying and could cause you to stress out. So whenever your sick or just have questions the health center is a great place to go.
